History and Purpose
The Tyler Independent School District Board of Trustees
authorized the creation of the TISD Police Department in April 2000. Since
that time, the department has grown from two officers to fifteen officers and one civilian employee. TISD Police Officers are licensed by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer
Standards and Education (TCLEOSE) and are listed as peace officers under the code of criminal procedure article 2.12(8). TISD Police officers have the same authority as
any peace officer in the State of Texas and enforce all laws whether on or off TISD property.
TISD Police Department jurisdiction covers approximately 205 square miles of
Smith County Texas, and the department serves over 21,000 students and
faculty on a daily basis. Six officers are assigned to the district's two
high schools and six officers are assigned to the middle schools and work patrol covering the district's 35 properties and bus routes.
