889 - LANGUAGE THERAPY ASSISTANT


QUALIFICATIONS:        

  1. High School diploma or GED; ability to grow professionally.

  2. Demonstrates interest in and aptitude for work to be performed.

  3. Keyboarding and computer proficiency preferred.

  4. Desire and ability to work with and communicate effectively with staff, students, and parents. 

  5. Knowledge of and/or experience with working with students with communication disorders.

REPORTS TO:         LICENSED SPEECH THERAPIST/DEAF EDUCATION CONSULTANT/PRINCIPAL/SPEECH SUPERVISOR 

JOB GOALS:                 

  1. To help all hearing impaired students, speech students, and students with communication disorders develop a communication system that enables them to interact with their peers, and adults.

  2. Assist speech therapist with the implementation of programming for assigned students.

  3. Maintain a positive relationship between parents and school personnel.


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  Noncontractual (At-will);Clerical/Technical Paygrade 3 Estimated 185 days;   estimated 8 hours daily  Wage/Hour Status:   Non-exempt


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
 

1.         

Assist in developing materials that relate to speech therapy, auditory training, and language development lessons for speech students.

2.         

Implement IEP goals for speech, auditory training, and language development as demonstrated by licensed speech pathologist.

3.         

Provide appropriate therapeutic intervention/instruction for effecting positive changes in communication behaviors of students as demonstrated by licensed speech pathologist.

4.      

Keep and record data for all speech therapy students assigned.

5.       

Participate as a member of the multi-disciplinary team for assigned students.

6.       

Guide independent study work assigned by speech therapist

7.         

Assist the speech therapist in devising special strategies for reinforcing skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities.

8.         

Inform speech therapist of special needs of assigned students.
Attend weekly sign language classes provided at the elementary and middle school campuses to improve sign skills and coordinate signs district wide.

9.      

Participate in inservice training programs.

10.    

Attend District Speech Therapy meetings.

11.      

Comply with directions and instructions from supervisor and performs other tasks and assumes such responsibilities as may be assigned.

12.      

Maintain positive and cooperative working relationship with colleagues and others in the conduct of district business and demonstrate team work in daily activities.

13.   

Is prompt, timely, and thorough in completing assignments and attending to details accurately and efficiently.

14.   

Is regular in attendance and complies with notification procedures for absences

15.   

Maintain confidentiality in the conduct of district business.

16.   

Comply with district policies, as well as state and federal laws and regulations.

17.  

Adheres to the district’s safety policies and procedures.

18.  

Participates in staff development training programs to improve job performance

        19.

Participates in meetings and special events as assigned.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work will be conducted at 1 or more assigned campuses.  Itinerant services between campuses is often required.   

Physical Demands:  

Includes but is not limited to sitting, standing, walking, and lifting.  The amount and nature of physical demands on the speech-language assistant are dependent upon student needs.  For example, lifting may be required to help position a non-ambulatory student.  Carrying of therapy materials from room to room or campus to campus is also required.  Working conditions that are equivalent to the learning environments for other general and special education students are required.

Mental Demands: 

Reading: ability to perform basic arithmetic; ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); maintain emotional control under stress.
