801 - EDUCATIONAL INTERPRETER (DEAF); CERTIFIED LEVEL III


QUALIFICATIONS:        

  1. High School diploma or GED.

  2. Demonstrates interest in and aptitude for work to be performed.

  3. Ability to grow professionally.

  4. Keyboarding, computer proficiency.

  5. Desire and ability to work with children.

  6. Texas Commission for the Deaf (TCD) or Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Level III certification.

  7. To comply with the "No Child Left Behind" requirements, at least 48 semester hours of college credit or pass a rigorous test to be administered through Region VII.

REPORTS TO:                     LEAD INTERPRETER/DEAF EDUCATION CONSULTANT/PRINCIPAL

JOB GOALS:                 

  1. To help all hearing impaired children achieve and function successfully in a mainstream setting, allowing them to develop into mature, able, and responsible adults.


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  Non-contractual (At-will); Clerical/Technical Paygrade 7 Estimated 185 days;  estimated 8 hours daily Wage/hour status:  Nonexempt


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
 

  1.  

Interprets for mainstream hearing impaired students on a daily basis.

  1.  

Is fluent in three different sign languages:  American Sign Language (ASL), Pidgin Signed English (PSE), and exact English, to meet varying language needs of different students.

  1.  

Interprets for assemblies, movies, and guest speakers.

  1.  

Interprets for students in counseling situations.

  1.  

Interprets for staff and faculty meetings for deaf professionals.

  1.  

Interprets for students before and after school for extracurricular activities.

  1.  

Interprets for deaf education consultant in testing situations.

  1.  

Is prepared with appropriate signs for special instructional vocabulary.

  1.  

Signs and finger-spells precisely and clearly.

  1.  

Maintains confidentiality under the terms set forth in the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.

  1.  

Accompanies hearing impaired students on all field trips and interprets, if necessary.

  1.  

Attends all Admission, Referral, and Dismissal (ARD) meetings and interprets, if necessary.

  1.  

Guides independent study work assigned by mainstream teacher.

  1.  

Rewords and explains information presented by teacher which is not understood by student due to language deficiencies.

  1.  

Rewrites tests to suit language level of mainstream students.

  1.  

Creates and provides written tutorials for tests.

  1.  

Meets with students as requested (by students or mainstream teacher) to provide tutorial in subject areas requiring remediation and to prepare students for upcoming tests.

  1.  

Be alert to possible emergency situations that might arise in the classrooms and is aware of the best possible means of protecting the well-being of the student.

  1.  

Assists the deaf education and/or mainstream teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interest, and abilities.

  1.  

Informs mainstream teacher of basic special needs of hearing impaired students.

  1.  

Attends weekly sign language classes provided at elementary and middle school campuses to improve sign skills and coordinate signs district wide.

  1.  

Attends special sign classes, as necessary, to learn new sign systems.

  1.  

Participates in in-service training programs.

  1.  

A non-certified interpreter will strive to attain state required certification at Level I; Certified I, will strive to maintain certification at Level I or higher; and Certified II, will strive to maintain certification at Level II or higher.

  1.  

Complies with directions and instructions from supervisor and performs other tasks and assumes such responsibilities as may be assigned.

  1.  

Maintains positive and cooperative working relationships with colleagues and others in the conduct of district business and demonstrates team work in daily activities.

  1.  

Is prompt, timely, and thorough in completing assignments and attending to details accurately and efficiently.

  1.  

Meets attendance standards and complies with notification procedures for absences.

  1.  

Provides complete and accurate information in the conduct of district business.

Maintains confidentiality in the conduct of district business.

Complies with district policies, as well as state and federal laws and regulations.
