734 - St. Louis Teacher Assistant


QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. High school diploma or GED;

  2. To comply with the "No Child Left Behind" requirements, at least 48 semester hours of college credit or pass a rigorous test to be administered through Region VII.

  3. Experience working with students or parents.

  4. Ability to work with children with disabilities.

  5. Desire and ability to work with and communicate effectively with staff, students, and parents.

REPORTS TO:             Building Principal and Supervising Teacher.

JOB GOALS:   

  1. To help meet physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities.

  2. To maintain a positive relationship between parents and school personnel.     

                                   


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  Noncontractual (At-will); Clerical/Technical;   Paygrade 3; Estimated 185 days; estimated 8 hours daily; Wage/hour:  nonexempt


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
 

1.    

Help meet the individual needs of students, including transferring them to and from wheelchairs, lifting and positioning them, interpreting instructions for them, etc.

2.    

Help students take care of physical needs and personal care, including feeding, bathroom needs, and personal hygiene.

3.    

Help manage behavior or students.  This includes intervening in crisis situations and restraining disruptive or dangerous student behavior as needed.

4.    

Assist assigned students or small groups to develop motor skills and conduct instructional exercises assigned by the teacher.

5.    

Assist assigned students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom.  This includes lunchroom, bus, and playground duty.

6.    

Keep teacher informed of special needs or problems of individual students.

7.    

Oral/Nasal suction.

8.    

Tracheostomy suction using sterile procedures.

9.    

Nebulizer treatments.

10. 

Minor emergencies.

11. 

Catheterization.

12. 

Gastrostomy tube feeding.

13. 

Complies with directions and instructions from supervisor and performs other tasks and assumes such responsibilities as may be assigned.

14. 

Maintains positive and cooperative working relationships with colleagues and others in the conduct of district business; demonstrates teamwork in daily activities.

15. 

Is prompt, timely, and thorough in completing assignments and attending to details accurately and efficiently.

16. 

Is regular in attendance and complies with notification procedure for absences.

17. 

Provides complete and accurate information in the conduct of district business.

18. 

Maintains confidentiality in the conduct of district business.

19. 

Complies with district policies, as well as state and federal laws and regulations.

20. 

Adheres to the district’s safety policies and procedures.

21. 

Participates in staff development training programs to improve job performance.

22. 

Participates in meetings and special events as assigned.

23. If applicable, input, verify, or update PEIMS information as assigned by supervisor.

 

EQUIPMENT USED:

                Wheelchair lift, ramps, adaptive equipment, oxygen gauges, etc.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental factors:  Maintain emotional control under stress.  Frequent standing; stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing and pulling; regular heavy lifting of students.  Biological exposure to bacteria and communicable diseases.
