729A - ESL SECONDARY INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT


REPORTS TO:  ESL Coordinator

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. High School Diploma or GED
  2. Fifteen hours college credit with some business orientation; or equivalent business school background; or three years of general clerical/secretarial experience
  3. Keyboarding and computer proficiency
  4. Computational, organizational, and communication skills
  5. Verbal and written  Spanish fluency

JOB GOALS:

  1. To provide support and assist the daily operation of the ESL instructional program.


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  Noncontractual (At-will); Clerical/Technical;   Paygrade 3;  Estimated 192 days; estimated 8 hours daily; wage/hour: nonexempt


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
 

1.    

Administer and/or assist in the following tests (English/Spanish) according to local policy set forth in the Bilingual/ESL Operating Manual and/or TEA: Oral Language Proficiency Test, TELPAS Holistic and Reading assessments, and district level assessments for students enrolled in the ESL program.

2.    

1.      Maintain district database of LEP students that will aide teachers in developing lesson plans to meet the needs of students with various language levels of English proficiency.

3.    

1.      Support campuses with the enrollment procedures.

4.    

1.      Serve as a guide and resource for LEP students who are enrolling into the district for the first time.

5.    

Work cooperatively with all district personnel and campus faculty (ex: teachers, specialists, department lead teachers, etc.)  who serve LEP students.

6.    

1.      Ability to communicate effectively in Spanish with students who are at the beginning levels of English proficiency. 

7.    

1.      Keep supervisor informed of special needs or problems of individual students.

8.    

1.      Adheres to the district’s safety policies and procedures.

9.    

1.      Participates in staff development training programs to improve job performance.

10. 

1.      Participates in meetings and special events assigned.

11. 

1.      Complies with directions and instructions from supervisor and performs other tasks and assumes such responsibilities as related to the position and assigned.

12. 

1.      Maintains positive and cooperative working relationships with colleagues and others in the conduct of district business and demonstrates team work in daily activities.

13. 

1.      Is prompt and timely in completing assignments and attending to details accurately and
efficiently.

14. 

Is regular in attendance and complies with notification procedures for absences.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Mental Demands: Reading, ability to communicate in English and Spanish effectively (verbal and written); ability to perform basic arithmetic; maintain emotional control under stress; works with frequent interruptions.
Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Repetitive hand motions; prolonged use of computer terminal; occasionally lifting heavy boxes; works with frequent interruptions.
