News Release TISD Hires Deputy Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction
Tyler Independent School District Board of Trustees has approved and named Gary Mooring, a Texas educator with more than 26 years of experience, to the key post of Deputy Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction. In this position, he will be responsible for the implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of all curriculum and instructional programs for the school district.
“TISD is very fortunate to hire Gary Mooring as Deputy Superintendent. Gary has a wealth of experience including elementary teaching experience, middle and high school principalship experience, regional service center experience and successful experience in two superintendent positions,” Superintendent David Simmons said.
Mooring began his career in public education in Austin ISD, and then continued in Jacksonville, Texas. He taught sixth and fourth grade for six years, including several years as a Gifted & Talented teacher. He then served one year as the Jacksonville middle school assistant principal, three years as the middle school principal and two years as the high school principal in Jacksonville. After a move to the Austin area, he worked as a grade level principal at Pflugerville High School, then as Hutto High School Principal. Mooring became Superintendent of 3A Bishop Consolidated ISD in 2000 until Hutto ISD called him back to replace their retiring superintendent in 2003.
Mooring was the UIL District Chairman for District 19AAA, Deputy Director for the Equity Center, Region XIII, Executive Member of Region XIII Superintendent Advisory Committee, a member of Texas Association of School Administrators, Texas Association of School Personnel Administrators, and Texas Association of Suburban and Mid-Urban Schools, and was past president of the Coastal Bend Telecommunications Network.
“In addition to his many strengths related to curriculum instruction, he has a very collaborative leadership style,” said Simmons. “He is also one of the most pleasant and down to earth individuals you will ever meet, and I have no doubt he will provide exceptional leadership to our Instructional Division.”
Mooring holds a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from West Texas A & M University. He received his Master’s Degree in Educational Administration and Superintendent Certification from the University of Texas at Tyler.
The TISD Board of Trustees approved Mooring’s hiring at its August 10 meeting. Mooring will be introduced at the TISD General Convocation August 16. He officially begins his duties September 1.
