News Release Tyler ISD Statement February 8, 2011
Because the safety of our students is our foremost concern, the Robert E. Lee High School campus was in a lockdown situation for approximately 30 minutes this afternoon.
The lockdown occurred as the result of a student report to the campus Crime Stoppers program of an alleged theft. The student in question was approached, at which time he dropped his backpack and ran off campus.
The contents of the backpack included a prohibited weapon. The student is currently off campus and the Tyler ISD Police is being assisted by the Tyler Police Department in securing his location.
Although we hope we never have these types of instances, this is a great example of how to use the Crime Stoppers program successfully and how students can help keep each other safe. We applaud the efforts of our students in communicating this information to school officials. Campus administrators acted immediately to secure the campus and at this time the campus is safe to resume normal classroom operations.
We appreciate the efforts of the students, staff, and both law enforcement agencies in acting efficiently and effectively to secure the campus in a timely manner.
