TISD Teachers Selected to Travel through Time

Three social studies teachers are packing their bags for an experience of a lifetime by traveling from the colonial era through the Reconstruction period in a matter of days.  Jerry Frazier from Moore Middle School, Katherine Bozick from Hubbard Middle School and Aimee Dennis from Hogg Middle School will be attending the Humanities Texas 2010 summer institute.  The program entitled “Shaping the American Republic to 1877,” is a series of six summer institutes on university campuses throughout the state. Frazier will attend the June 8-11 institute at the University of Houston in Houston, while Bozick and Dennis will attend June 13-16 at the Texas Christian University in Fort Worth.

Each program focuses on topics in U.S. history and culture from the colonial era through Reconstruction that are central to the 8th grade social studies curriculum.  After submitting an application to attend the Humanities Texas Summer Institute, each teacher was nominated by Representative Leo Berman.  Approximately 240 teachers from around the state of Texas are chosen to attend these institutes.

“This is an honor and remarkable opportunity for our teachers to be chosen to participate in these institutes,” said Sarah Long, Tyler ISD Coordinator of Social Studies.

The six institutes will be held on the campuses of The University of Texas at Austin, Texas A&M International University (Laredo), the University of Houston, The University of Texas at El Paso, Texas Christian University (Fort Worth), and The University of Texas at San Antonio. At each institute, outstanding faculty from throughout the nation will share their expertise and innovative scholarship with Texas teachers.
