News Release TISD Participates in Tobacco-Free Kids Day
Several local schools will be participating in the 4th Annual Texas Tobacco-Free Kids Day on Wednesday, March 24th, 2010. The goal of this year’s event is to get every school in Texas involved in the effort to help children make healthy choices by not using tobacco.
There will be 66 students and faculty wearing black shirts with tobacco facts on the back at each participating school. The number 66 represents the number of people that die every day in Texas from tobacco related deaths.
Participating schools will be: Dogan Middle School, Hubbard Middle School, John Tyler High School, and Robert E. Lee High School and Whitehouse High School. This event is organized by Tyler ISD Campus Crimestoppers and Whitehouse High School Campus Crimestoppers.
Campus Crimestopper student board members came up with this plan after attending a Texas Tobacco-Free Teen Leadership Conference in July.
The following announcement will be made at each participating school:
Do you know what's in a cigarette? How about rat poison, ammonia and nail polish remover. Why would you want to put that in your mouth? You will see students and faculty wearing black shirts today representing the 66 people that die every day in Texas from tobacco related deaths. Today is Texas Tobacco-Free Kids Day. Save yourself the trouble and don't start. If you happen to know someone with tobacco on campus, contact Crimestoppers.
Texas Tobacco-Free Kids Day is an awareness event to encourage students
to live tobacco-free lives and encourage schools to participate in
efforts to help kids do this.
The event is sponsored by the Texas Department of State Health Services
and the Center for Safe Communities and Schools. It's held in
conjunction with Kick Butts Day.
