TISD’s G.R.E.A.T. Students to Graduate

The Tyler Independent School District Police Department will recognize students who have completed the G.R.E.A.T. (Gang Resistance Education And Training) Program with a graduation ceremony.  The ceremony will be on Thursday, January 28, 2010, at 6:30 p.m. at Dogan Middle School, located at 2621 North Border, in Tyler.  A total of eighty-nine students have successfully completed the program.

The Tyler ISD Police Department kicked-off the G.R.E.A.T. program earlier this school year at Dogan Middle School.  The G.R.E.A.T. Program is a school-based, law enforcement officer-instructed classroom curriculum. With prevention as its primary objective, G.R.E.A.T. lessons focus on providing life skills to students to help them avoid using gang associated behavior and violence to solve problems.

“G.R.E.A.T. is an excellent program that allows the district to take a proactive approach to helping our students resist gang involvement and violence so that they can achieve an excellent education in Tyler ISD,” said Rex Brown, Tyler ISD Chief of Police.

G.R.E.A.T is a nationally recognized program designed to develop social competency skills, alter perceptions about gang involvement, foster empathy for your fellow man, encourage pro-social affiliations, and promote social responsibility.
