News Release TISD Students Earn Internship to NASA
Three Tyler ISD students will spend a portion of their summer at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Johnson Space Center. Amberle Rubin, from John Tyler High School, and Taylor McCaslin and Sabah Pervez, from Robert E. Lee High School applied to the NASA High School Aerospace Scholars (HAS) program earlier this school year and have now officially been accepted into the second part of the program. The students will attend a six-day internship to study math, science, engineering, or computer science by interacting with engineers at the NASA Johnson Space Center. Having completed the first component of the application process, which was an interactive on-line learning experience solving math problems, quizzes and writing essays in chemistry, physics, and mathematics, the students are ready for the second component, which is the summer workshop. To participate in this program, students completed a competitive process that included providing a high school transcript, a letter of recommendation and writing an essay to their state legislator. Rubin was nominated by Representative Leo Berman. McCaslin and Pervez were nominated by Senator Robert Nichols to participate in the scholars program. The three students are among more than 800 students across the state of Texas nominated by their state legislator.
