TISD Magnet and MYP Applications Now Available

            The Tyler Independent School District is now accepting applications for Magnet and Middle Years Programme (MYP) for the 2009 – 2010 school year.  Parents may pick up an application packet at their child’s elementary school or at one of the MYP schools.  All completed applications must be returned to the Magnet or Middle Years Programme campus by February 20, 2009.
 

Bell Elementary Global Communications Academy
Bell Elementary Global Communications Academy seeks to follow its motto “Above and Beyond” by providing students with an opportunity to learn and use skills needed to compete in a global society. The four strands of Bell’s magnet program include development in literacy, broadcast journalism/speech, foreign language and technology. The regular curriculum will be enhanced by these strands and students will participate in service learning projects as well as demonstrate authentic learning leading to increased student achievement. Caldwell Elementary Arts Academy
Caldwell Elementary Arts Academy provides opportunities for students throughout the District, as well as students in the attendance zone, to participate in an enriched academic program through the arts.  Drama, music, dance, and visual art are taught by specialists to kindergarten through fifth grade students.  A personalized learning community develops and strengthens each child’s talents and abilities.  Utilizing the best practices, research, and committed professionals, Caldwell Elementary Arts Academy is a unique and challenging learning experience for all children.

Acceptance into Caldwell Elementary Arts Academy is based on space available at the grade in which a student is applying.  In order for an application to be accepted for consideration, the parent must reside in the Tyler ISD attendance zone. Jones Elementary MST Academy
Through the lens of math, science and technology, students will focus on process skills and content to enable them to achieve at advanced levels.  A rigorous and challenging curriculum will be extended through community partnerships to include the application of knowledge in real world settings, service to the community, and career explorations. Andy Woods Elementary School -  An IB World School
The International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme is designed to provide students with a well-rounded education in all disciplines, focusing on the development of the “whole child.”  In addition to intellectual rigor and high academic standards, a strong emphasis is placed on the value of intercultural understanding and responsible citizenship.  The Primary Years Programme (PYP) at Andy Woods Elementary School is an IB Organization authorized high standards program for all students at Andy Woods Elementary School.  Transfers will be approved for students who meet gifted and talented criteria based solely on a space available basis in the grade in which they are applying.  Parents who are interested in the Andy Woods Elementary School may call 903-262-3498 for more information.
 

Rice Elementary School -  An IB World School
The International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme is designed to provide students with a well-rounded education in all disciplines, focusing on the development of the “whole child.”  In addition to intellectual rigor and high academic standards, a strong emphasis is placed on the value of intercultural understanding and responsible citizenship.  The Primary Years Programme (PYP) at Rice Elementary School is an IB Organization authorized high standards program for all students at Rice Elementary School.  Transfers will be approved for students who meet gifted and talented criteria based solely on a space available basis in the grade in which they are applying.  Parents who are interested in the Rice Elementary School may call 903-262-3498 for more information.

James S. Hogg Middle School – An IB World School
The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme is designed to provide students with a well-rounded education in all disciplines, focusing on the development of the “whole student.”  In addition to intellectual rigor and high academic standards, a strong emphasis is placed on the value of intercultural understanding and responsible citizenship.  The Middle Years Programme (MYP) at James S. Hogg Middle School is an IB Organization authorized advanced studies program for highly motivated middle school students.  Since James S. Hogg offers an authorized program, transfers from other TISD school zones will be approved for students who are accepted into the James S. Hogg MYP.  The transfer applications will allow approximately 100 new students to attend per grade level.  Parents who are interested in the program and would like to visit with current MYP parents and teachers about the program may call 903-262-1503 for more information.

IB Middle Years Pilot Programs

Boulter Middle School and Hubbard Middle School each offer a Middle Years Programme pilot of the Tyler Independent School District International Baccalaureate Programme.  A pilot program is a planning and implementing stage for faculty and staff prior to the process of becoming authorized as an IB Organization Programme and a school becoming an IB World School.  Only students living in the Boulter and Hubbard attendance zones may apply for the MYP pilot programs at those schools.

Parents of students living in the Hubbard school zone and interested in the program may call Karen McHam at 903-262-1608 for more information.  Transfers are not approved for pilot program schools.

Moore MST Magnet School
All students receive instruction in the five core discipline areas of reading, language arts, math, science, social studies and physical education or athletics. In addition, students have the opportunity to select elective courses that will promote discovering their talents and abilities through investigating a wide range of interests.


Students will be accepted based on a list of criteria set from the district on grades and test scores.  In addition, the students will have to write a paragraph about why they are interested in attending a math, science and technology magnet school.  Student’s current teachers will also be required to fill out a teacher recommendation form. 

All students accepted in the program will have the option to attend Moore through the 8th grade year.  The MST transfer applications will allow approximately 100 new students to attend per grade level until a total cap of 300 students is met for each of the 6th and 7th and 8th grades.  Parents who are interested in the Moore MST Magnet School may call 903.262.1640 for more information.

Any Tyler ISD parent of a fifth through seventh grade student who may be interested in learning more about the math science technology program are invited to attend.  Parents will be able to preview course offerings, review fine arts opportunities, and tour the campus. 

Robert E. Lee High School/IB Diploma Programme – An IB World School

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is designed to provide high school students the opportunity to participate in freshman college level classes in all disciplines, focusing on the development of the “whole student.”  In addition to intellectual rigor and high academic standards, a strong emphasis is placed on the value of conceptual thinking, intercultural understanding, and responsible citizenship.  The Diploma Programme (DIP) at Robert E. Lee High School is an IB Organization authorized advanced studies program for highly motivated students.  Students who are interested in the program may call at 903-262-3498 for more information.
