TISD Foundation’s We Believe In Tyler ISD Raises $225,000 Towards Goal

The Tyler ISD Foundation Board of Directors truly believes in Tyler ISD. Their campaign, “We Believe in Tyler ISD” continues until the end of February with a goal of $500,000. Last year’s campaign raised $385,000.

“We’ve reached the halfway point of our campaign and we have received about half of our goal,” said Larry Goddard, Executive Director of the Foundation. “Since the kickoff luncheon October 30th, we have raised over $225,000.”

Proceeds from the campaign are used for a variety of programs and projects within Tyler ISD which are not typically funded by public funding.

“Our volunteers are organized into four teams led by captains Beth Whitney, Todd Cruthird, Gary Howell, and Micheal Lavender,” said Ross Conner, Campaign Chair and Vice President-Development for the Tyler ISD Foundation. Each captain has about four or five board directors assigned to their team. And, each director has about ten prospects in Tyler to contact for a donation to this year’s campaign.

“This is the 19th Campaign to benefit the teachers, students and staff at Tyler ISD,” said Goddard. “The more we raise from the generous donors in Tyler, the more we are able to help support our classroom teachers and provide innovative projects in their classrooms.”

This year, donors will have yard signs which read “We Believe in Tyler ISD” to indicate their support of our public schools in Tyler. Tyler ISD has more than 18,000 students and over 2,500 employees.

Other programs funded by the Foundation include events such as Teacher of the Year, Convocation, Retiree Luncheon, and Night of Shining Stars, the event which honors the top graduates of both high schools and the teachers they designate as Most Influential in their academic successes.

“Education Foundations for public school districts are somewhat new in the non-profit world,” said Goddard. “But, this decade is the one in which we are seeing more donors understand that academic success begins at a young age—it is crucial for the success of our society that we provide the best public education as possible and this campaign helps ensure that our teachers have additional funding for their projects. Rather than contribute to college scholarships, it is just as important, or maybe more important, to provide funding for teachers in the elementary and secondary levels.”

This is the second year for Ross Conner to lead the Campaign. The Tyler ISD Foundation Board consists of 32 board directors who will oversee the proceeds of the campaign and provide credible stewardship that the monies collected will be spent on the areas of greatest needs for Tyler ISD.

The campaign runs through February 29, 2009.
