Board Notes A Summary of the April 15, 2010, Tyler ISD Board of Trustees Workshop Meeting
Board Recognizes Students and Staff Tyler ISD is proud to recognize Shezeen Ahmed a third grader at Rice Elementary for her award winning artwork titled “My Water Colors.” Shezeen won a state award on this piece through the PTA Reflections. Her artwork was recently displayed on the Texas Education Agency web site. Student artwork that is displayed on TEA’s web site has already been exhibited in the offices of the Texas Education Agency, the Texas Commission on the Arts or Legislative Budget Board in Austin, Texas. Congratulations Shezeen!
Tyler ISD is proud to recognize two seventh grade students, Genesis Borens, at Hogg Middle School and Ariel Cordova, at Hubbard Middle School, for volunteering their time to mentor other girls. Genesis and Ariel meet every other Monday at the Tyler Public Library to encourage young girls in grades kindergarten through third grade, in the areas of reading, creative arts, and self-esteem. The hour long program is packed with everything from music to snacks. Thank you, Genesis and Ariel, for giving voluntarily of your time.
Campus Spotlight Presented to Board Douglas Elementary Principal, Christy Roach, gave a presentation to the Board of Trustees about her campus and the great things that are taking place.
Board Authorizes and Accepts Donations The Board of Trustees authorized and approved the acceptance of the following donations totaling $68,234.45: $ 9,000.00 from Dell, Inc. to Technology Services in support of the thin client project $12,167.50 through Tyler ISD Foundation from Great American Discount Card sales to 16 various elementary Campuses $5,103.95 through Tyler ISD Foundation from Bonnie and Tab Beall (gift in kind to Tyler ISD) for Statues for Clarkston Elementary $13,963.00 from Caldwell PTA to Caldwell Elementary $8,000.00 from Robert E. Lee Football Mom’s Club for the Football Activity Fund Board Approves Date to Canvass Votes of May 8, 2010, School Trustee Election The Board of Trustees approved Monday, May 17, 2010 as the date to canvass the votes for the May 8th trustee election. Terms of office for Single Member Districts 1, 3 and 6 will expire in May. Eleno Licea is unopposed as a candidate for Single Member District 1 and Michelle Carr is unopposed for Single Member 6. Single Member District 3 has two candidates seeking election to that district. The Texas Election Code requires the Board to meet and declare the official results. Board Approves Painting Bids for Three Campuses The administration recommends that the Board approve a contract with Watson Commercial in the amount of $117,000 for painting Moore Middle School, a contract with Toole Painting Company in the amount of $53,200 for painting Plyler Instructional Complex, a contract with Braswell Paint Company in the amount of $62,000 for painting Rice Elementary School Exterior. Total amount for the three bids is $232,200. Funds will be available in the Preventive Maintenance Budget. Board Approves Pre-Construction Asbestos Abatement at Two Campuses The Board of Trustees approved a contract with Inland Environmental in the amount of $53,388 for a base bid with an additional $4,950 for owner phased mobilization fees, totaling $58,338 for the Owens Elementary campus. The Board awarded the Birdwell Elementary contract to Inland Environmental in the amount of $11,305 with an owner’s contingency in the amount of $10,000 for a total of $21,305. These contracts will be funded from the 2008 Bond in the amount of $104,643 including engineering fees and is within the allotted budget. Board Approves Roofing Quotes for Various District Facilities The Board of Trustees approved roofing quotes for 15 roofs at several school locations which have been identified and scheduled for various repairs and/or replacement. The summer roofing projects include Caldwell Auditorium, Hubbard Middle School gutters, John Tyler (Old Field House), Robert E. Lee (walkway canopies and Library aluminum walkway canopy), Moore Middle School (walkway and reroofing materials for 10 portable classrooms) by Maintenance Staff for a grand total of $148,180.40. Funding for the 2010 roofing projects are within allotted budget restraints and will be provided from the Preventative Maintenance Program.
