Industry Growth Initiative Project Presented at Board Meeting

Paul Umbach with Tripp Umbach and Associates and Adam Levy with 30 Point Strategies gave a presentation on behalf of the City of Tyler to the Tyler ISD Board of Trustees regarding Industry Growth Initiative Project.  The objective of the project was to pinpoint the industries that make the most sense to focus resources given Tyler’s unique characteristics and then to develop a series of recommended strategies and tactics to enable Tyler to grow into an emerging innovative economy.  One of the key points presented to the Board stressed the importance of education into this strategy.

Language Arts Program Discussed at Board Meeting

Coordinator of English Language Arts, Tammy Johnson, and Language Arts Facilitator, Jan Bogard, presented to the Board of Trustees a report about the District Literacy Program.  The data shared showed an increase in TAKS reading and writing scores in various grade levels.  The team also explained the changes in English Language Arts and the TAKS test.  There are state assessment changes in grades 3, 6, and 8.  The District is also in the reading textbook adoption process for kindergarten through 12th grade.  The ELA website and on-line curriculum information was shared with the board members.  These resources are accessible not only at school but also at home anytime.  There are also additional changes in the horizon.  The year 2012 will be a big year for English Language Arts.  State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STARR) will be part of the program and will also include testing passages from various genres such as poetry, biographies, and narratives.

Board Approves Managed Student E-mail Service

The Board approved a contract for the managed student E-mail accounts with Gaggle.Net, Inc. in the amount of $25,374.90 per year. Funding for the project is provided by the E-rate funds. Final cost to the district after E-rate priority one funding will be approximately $6,850.00 per year.  Three campuses; Orr Elementary, Hubbard Middle School, and Moore Middle School will pilot Gaggle.Net this spring to incorporate reading, writing, and provide an avenue for students to complete assignments and learn the proper E-mail process and etiquette. These pilots will provide the opportunity for teachers and students to use technology before, during, and after class within a safe web environment as we prepare to offer student E-mail as an instructional tool.

All campuses grades four through twelve will implement in the 2010-2011 school year.
