A Summary of the November 19, 2009, Tyler ISD Board of Trustees Meeting

 

Board Recognizes Student and Staff

The Board of Trustees recognized the following 11 high school seniors for being selected to serve on the Texas Bank and Trust (TB&T) 2009-2010 Student Board of Directors.  The students from Robert E Lee are: Richie Booth, Taylor McCaslin, Jesse Rickman, Clinton Willbanks, Alex Wood, and LaDonna Wooten.  The students from John Tyler are: CaShonda Henderson, Juana Huerta, Thornell Lewis, Megan Maxson and Nicholas Wideman.

The TB&T Student Board is a prestigious program recognizing outstanding high school seniors in the community. The student directors will attend meetings throughout the school year where they will learn about banking, budgeting, credit, the stock market, trust and brokerage services, job interviewing, and for the first time, serve as advisors to the bank on three areas of banking technology – the redesign of the bank’s website, the introduction of mobile banking, and the use of social media.

 

Congratulations to John Orbaugh and the Technology Services Department for being in the Top 100 School Districts recognized for keeping students safe online with outstanding netTrekker usage in 2008-2009 school year and for an extremely successful district wide implementation of netTrekker.

 

Congratulations to Dr. Bryan C. Jack Elementary School for receiving ENERGY STAR for 2009 by The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. To earn the ENERGY STAR, a school must be more energy efficient than 75% of similar buildings nationwide.  Jack Principal Shauna Hittle; Tyler ISD Energy Trades Coordinator, Walter Jordan; Gary Bristow with Engineering firm Estes McClure; and Kent Harris with Eubanks, Harris, Roberts, Craig are the architects that designed the school.

 

Campus Spotlight Presented to Board

Robert E. Lee High School Principal, Roger McAdoo, gave a presentation to the Board of Trustees about his campus and the great things that are taking place. 

 

Board Authorizes and Accepts Donations

The Board of Trustees authorized and approved the acceptance of the following donations totaling $36,339:

 

$ 5,000 through the Tyler ISD Foundation for the Rice Elementary Playground;

$31,339 through the Rice Elementary PTA for the Rice Elementary Playground.

 

 

Board Approves Donated Boundary Survey Services at John Tyler High School

The Board of Trustees approved and accepted the donation from the Kilgore Company and others for boundary survey services at John Tyler High School. Robert E. Lee will be funded from the Facility Budget.  Surveys will include easement reviews, deed research, boundary plats, and overlays to existing aerials. Surveys are necessary for future references and for any improvements to either property. Kilgore submitted a proposal of $15,400 for Robert E Lee and $13,400 for John Tyler. Kilgore Company and others feel as though they have a responsibility to give back to the local community and want to take this opportunity to donate these services to John Tyler.

 

 

Board Approves Technology Plan

The Board of Trustees approved the Technology Plan for 2010 through 2013.  The intent of this plan is to provide a clear overview of technology in Tyler ISD.  The plan outlines how the district will provide present and future technology needs for students and staff.  The plan must coordinate with specific elements of the E-Rate program, No Child Left Behind (NCLB) legislation and the TEA Long Range Plan for Technology (LRPT).  The Technology Services Department has prepared a three year technology plan that meets all sixty-six required elements.

 

 

Board Approves Bond Funds for Design, Renovations and Additions to Two Campuses

The Board of Trustees approved the utilization of the 2008 and 2004 bond funds for the design, renovations and additions to Birdwell Elementary School and Owens Elementary School.  The 2008 Bond Program required the replacement of six (6) elementary schools. With all schools under construction and all budgets established, the District will realize approximately 20 million dollars in savings.  Additionally, there is about 3 million dollars in savings from the 2004 Bond, providing a total of 23 million dollars in savings. 

 

 

Board Approves Architectural and Engineering Services for Two Campuses

The Board of Trustees approved Administration to enter into contract negotiations with

Eubanks-Harris-Roberts-Craig Architects.  With funding from residual funds of the 2008 and 2004 Bond, the Administration is requesting the expedition of design services for Owens Elementary School and Birdwell Elementary School.

 

 

Facilities Department Provides Update on School Construction Projects

Construction Project Manager, Monte Robinette, provided the Board of Trustees an update on the progress of the school construction projects. 

 

Clarkston Elementary School

Standing Seam Metal Roof is complete at two areas; Masonry work is continuing in all areas and windows are being installed.  Painting and Ceramic Tile work at 1st & 2nd floor is underway; Toilet Partitions and Ceiling Grid is being installed; Permanent Electric Power is installed and Light Fixtures are being installed. Installation of Kitchen Equipment is started

Progress for the next month will be the continuation of interior finishes in all Areas. Completion of exterior brickwork .

 

Griffin Elementary School

Mass excavation is underway.  Two areas are at subgrade and installation of select fill is started.

The next month’s work will be focused on mass excavation and fill, site utilities and the start of concrete foundation work in two areas.

 

Orr Elementary School

Roofing on three flat areas is complete; Structural Steel detail work is nearing completion, with only the Gym and one area remains; Exterior brickwork is progressing well and windows are being installed.  Sheetrock work has started in two areas; Storm drainage installation in Courtyard is started.

The next month’s progress will be the completion of steel erection and roof deck. Dry-in of four areas. Installation of Standing Seam Metal Roof.

 

Woods Elementary School

Structural steel erection is nearing completion with only detail work remaining at the south end; Roofing has been installed on three flat areas;  Exterior Brickwork is progressing and windows are being installed; Sheetrock work has started at the single story classroom area.

The next month’s progress will be the completion of steel erection, installation of standing seam metal roof. Continuation of sheetrock work in all areas and the start of installation of finishes.

 

Jones/Boshears Campus

Steel erection is complete on all buildings and all roof decking is installed.  Installation of drywall is almost complete in two areas; Brick work is complete on two areas and windows are installed; Brickwork is underway at two areas; Interior finishes are starting in two areas; Sheetrock work has started in Area C.

The next month’s progress will be framing for sheetrock in two areas. Continuation of finishes in two areas. Completion of Concrete drives and parking areas. Site retaining walls are underway.
